The Team
From the time of its founding, Yi Shin has striven to maintain the excellence of traditional operatic techniques and vocal forms, at the same time combining them with features of modern theater art and professional writing and directing. The result is an art form of remarkable vitality, which has won significant recognition.
In both 1990 and 1991, in the Taiwan Traditional Theater Contest, Yi Shin won the prize for Best Performing Group as well as numerous prizes for individuals. It was subsequently invited by the Taipei City Traditional Arts Festival to perform at Taipei Metropolitan Hall. In the 1998 National Traditional Theater Contest, Yi Shin won the awards for Best Performing Group, Best Stage Technique, Best Directing, Best Male Supporting Role, Best Female Supporting Role, Best Orchestra, Best Painted-Face Role, and Best Clown Role. On four consecutive occasions, Yi Shin was selected as the best group in the Taiwanese Opera festivals convened by the National Center For Traditional Arts: in 2000 and 2001 at the Outdoor Taiwanese Opera Company Carnival, in 2003 at Bravo! Outdoor Taiwanese Opera Company Performance, and in 2005 at Go East! Outdoor Taiwanese Opera Company Performance. In addition, Yi Shin twice won selection as an Outstanding Group in the Taiwanese Opera Projects organized by the National Culture and Arts Foundation. The group’s performance was praised by specialists and scholars for its ‘directing style’ and ‘theatrical tension.’
The group’s performance also won appreciation from the Council for Cultural Affairs, winning selection as one of the Outstanding National-Supported Performing Arts Groups each year from 2003 to 2009. Yi Shin was also the first Taiwanese traditional performing arts group to be invited to perform in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, Mainland China. At the Cross-Straits Gezaixi Opera Festivals in 1993 and 2004 and 2008,Yi Shin performed its specialty pieces and was highly praised in Mainland opera circles.
